Dracaena pethera develops broad, rigid leaves with irregular pale patterning and distinctly undulating margins. The foliage emerges from a rhizomatous base and builds a low, sculptural fan that feels visually heavier and more textural than the narrow-leaved snake plant forms.

This is the plant long sold as Sansevieria kirkii. It rewards bright indirect light, stable warmth, and deliberate dry cycles. The combination of patterned foliage, unusual leaf edges, and slower growth gives it stronger collector interest while still fitting Flora Cantina’s root-visible glass-pot systems.

WATER / ROOT ZONE

Its broad, thick leaves still store significant water, but the plant has more leaf surface than cylindrical Dracaena. Use a strong wet-to-dry cycle without leaving the rhizome continuously wet.

LIGHT

Bright filtered light supports the sculptural leaf form and surface pattern. Avoid abrupt high-intensity exposure on leaves that developed in shade.

CONTAINER

Keep the rhizome in a stable, well-aerated vessel with only modest extra root volume; slow growth makes oversized wet media especially unnecessary.

Genus Guide

Dracaena plants thrive in moderate humidity and slightly moist soil. However, it’s important to let the soil dry out completely before watering to avoid overwatering. This plant can go several weeks without water.

In terms of lighting, Dracaena plants prefer bright, indirect light but can also tolerate low lighting conditions.

When it comes to potting, repot the plant in pots that are no larger than 1 inch in diameter from the root system.

For the soil, use a chunky soil mix specifically designed for orchids or epiphytes, such as any branded potting soil mix for these types of plants.
