Dracaena angolensis produces thick, cylindrical leaves that rise directly from a rhizomatous base, creating one of the most architectural forms in the genus. Subtle longitudinal grooves and green-grey banding add surface detail without interrupting the strong vertical silhouette.

The species is widely sold under its former name Sansevieria cylindrica. It is drought-adapted and slow-growing indoors, favoring a coarse, oxygen-rich root environment with clear dry cycles. Its exposed rhizome and robust root structure make it especially interesting in a glass pot where root-zone behavior can be observed.

Care Guide
Dracaena angolensis

WATER / ROOT ZONE

The cylindrical, water-storing leaves and rhizome support a pronounced dry cycle. Water thoroughly, then allow substantial to complete dry-back before irrigating again.

SYSTEM

Keep the root zone coarse and highly aerated, especially around the rhizome and leaf bases. In wick culture, use a conservative reservoir and intentional dry periods rather than continuous saturation.

LIGHT

Brighter light supports stronger, more compact spear growth, but acclimate gradually.

Genus Guide

Dracaena plants thrive in moderate humidity and slightly moist soil. However, it’s important to let the soil dry out completely before watering to avoid overwatering. This plant can go several weeks without water.

In terms of lighting, Dracaena plants prefer bright, indirect light but can also tolerate low lighting conditions.

When it comes to potting, repot the plant in pots that are no larger than 1 inch in diameter from the root system.

For the soil, use a chunky soil mix specifically designed for orchids or epiphytes, such as any branded potting soil mix for these types of plants.
